ECU Remapping Perth
What is an ECU?
All modern vehicles on the road today have an ECU (Engine Control Unit). The ECU can be described as the vehicles ‘brain’ and contains a processor that takes information from various sensors throughout the engine and analyses information such as the engine temperature, accelerator pedal angle, oxygen content in the burnt exhaust gases as well as many more parameters. Using the information from these sensors it can then manage the fuel quantity, fuel mix, timing and a whole range of other parameters to maintain optimum performance, economy and emissions etc. What is ECU Remapping? When a manufacturer develops a new vehicle they have to take into consideration all of the conditions it may be subjected to in all of the global regions in which they intend to sell this model. This means instead of just optimising the ECU’s program or ‘mapping’ to deliver the best performance, or the most fuel efficiency, they have to make compromises to the map to take into account these differing operating conditions. These could include sub-standard fuels, extremes in temperature and altitude, differing emission laws, tax classes and even the possibility that the vehicle may not be serviced on a regular basis and in accordance with the manufacturers recommended instructions. The manufacturer has to ensure that the vehicle will operate under these conditions even if it means compromising in some areas.
Why remap?
The potential of your engine is usually restricted by the manufacturer to comply with global regulations and conditions, or simply for marketing purposes. We will free your engine from these restraints unleashing its potential for a better driving experience. We use industry leading technology offering the finest performance upgrades available in Perth.
What is Chip Tuning or Re-Chipping?
ECU remapping is not to be confused with ‘Chip Tuning’. Chip Tuning was done in the 80’s and 90’s, it involved reading, modifying and programming a chip inside the engines ECU called an EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory). The EPROM chip was physically removed from the ECU, the EPROM code was read, modified, then programmed into a new EPROM chip and fitted to the ECU. At the time, ‘Chip Tuning’ or ‘Re-Chipping’ procedure was state-of-the-art cutting edge technology. Early EPROM ‘Chip’ technology has been superseded by versatile ECU remapping, no ECU parts need to be changed.
What does ECU remapping actually do?
ECU remapping is about adjusting various parameters within the ECU mapping files such as fuel pressure, boost pressure (on turbocharged applications), ignition advance and throttle pedal control amongst others to release the true performance from the engine. It is a completely safe process as it is just giving the engine the performance it should have had in the first place before all the compromises were applied to the original programming. Every engine will have its own unique mapping and by adjusting this we can fine tune the characteristics of the engine to suit your performance requirements.
What are the benefits of ECU remapping?
ECU remapping offer the best horse-power-per-dollar modification to your vehicle, improved torque management can play a big role in how the vehicle feels and performs, especially during moments of low gear and rapid acceleration. Calibration engineers pay close attention to several parameters directly related to fuel economy, especially while cruising at motorway speeds. Depending on your driving style and fuel quality, better fuel consumption can be achieved.
Can I return my car to standard after ECU remapping?
If for any reason you wish to return your vehicle to its original settings this can be done easily as we always keep a copy of the original software as a backup.
